Word & Character Counter
Count words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs as you type — with estimated reading and speaking time.
How to Use This Counter
Type directly into the box or paste text from anywhere. The counts update instantly — words, total characters, characters excluding spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and lines — along with an estimated reading and speaking time. Nothing is uploaded or stored; all counting happens in your browser, so it works offline and keeps your text private.
Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of about 225 words per minute, and speaking time assumes a comfortable presentation pace of around 130 words per minute.
Common Use Cases
- Essays and assignments: Hit a word count target for school or university work
- Social media: Stay within character limits for posts, bios, and captions
- SEO and meta tags: Keep titles and meta descriptions within recommended character lengths
- Speeches and presentations: Estimate how long your script will take to deliver
- Articles and blogs: Check length and reading time before publishing
- Job applications: Fit a cover letter or personal statement within a limit
Tips
Character limits to remember: An SEO page title is best kept under about 60 characters and a meta description under about 160. A tweet/X post allows 280 characters on a standard account.
Words per page: A typical double-spaced page in 12pt font holds roughly 250 words, so a 1,000-word essay is about four pages.
