VAT & Tax Calculator
Add or remove VAT and sales tax at the correct rate for your country, with a clear net, tax, and gross breakdown.
Standard UK VAT is 20%. A reduced 5% rate applies to things like home energy and child car seats; many goods (most food, children's clothes, books) are zero-rated.
How to Use This Calculator
Choose whether you want to add tax to a net (tax-exclusive) price or remove tax from a gross (tax-inclusive) price using the tabs. Select your country to load its tax name, currency, and standard rate presets, then enter the amount. Tap a rate button to switch between the standard and reduced rates, or type any rate directly. The net, tax, and gross figures update instantly.
Add tax answers "what's the total after tax?" — useful when quoting a price to a customer. Remove tax answers "how much of this total is tax?" — useful for reclaiming VAT or recording the net cost of a receipt.
Common Use Cases
- Invoicing: Add VAT to a net quote so a client sees the full amount payable
- Expense claims: Remove VAT from a receipt total to record the net cost and reclaimable tax
- Pricing products: Work out the shelf price once tax is added at the correct rate
- Cross-border shopping: Compare how much tax is included in a price between countries
- Bookkeeping: Split a gross transaction into net and tax lines for your accounts
VAT & Sales Tax Around the World
Most countries use a value-added tax (VAT) — called GST in some places and TVA, IVA, or MwSt. in others — charged at each stage of the supply chain and included in the price consumers pay. The United States is the notable exception: it has no national VAT, and instead charges sales tax set at the state and local level, so the rate varies by location and is usually added at checkout rather than shown on the shelf price.
- United Kingdom: 20% standard VAT, 5% reduced, 0% on many essentials
- Ireland: 23% standard VAT, with 13.5% and 9% reduced rates
- Germany: 19% standard, 7% reduced (MwSt.)
- France: 20% standard (TVA), plus 10%, 5.5% and 2.1%
- Australia: flat 10% GST
- United States: no VAT; sales tax varies by state, roughly 0–10%
